In 2014, I started writing about protest violence and corruption in Venezuela for a blog that I ran called In Venezuela.
In 2015, I joined the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto as a doctoral student. My doctoral thesis explored the role of armed civilian groups in the 2014/2018 anti-government protests in Venezuela. I successfully defended my thesis in 2022.
Since 2018, I’ve been working at Bellingcat, a world-class open source research organization with a mission to teach others how to uncover wrongdoing and document atrocities using freely available information and digital tools.
I started out as a volunteer, and was then hired as a researcher. Since 2023, I’ve been the Director of Research and Training at Bellingcat, where I coordinate all of our research and training outputs.
In 2023, I joined Utrecht University’s Global Justice Investigations Lab as an Assistant Professor. I co-teach a course where students learn how to use digital open source methods to investigate war crimes and other atrocities.
